Form or Reputation?

Manchester United go into today's match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford as the only undefeated team in the league this season. Ferguson's men have not tasted defeat since that title deciding match against Chelsea in April, but their opponents tonight are confident of getting a win at the 'Theater of Dreams' just as they did last season.

Sir Alex's team is in form at the moment, snatching victories from the jaws of defeat in away games against Blackpool and Southampton respectively, but he does have one major selection headache. Does he start with Rooney and Berbatov up front, or replace Rooney with the in-form Javier Hernandez.

Wayne Rooney is a brilliant center forward, there is no doubt about what he provides for the team, but his goal return suggests otherwise. He has only scored one goal in open play this season, and has missed quite a few easy chances in front of goal, whereas Chicharito has scored a league goal every 116 minutes! Only Berbatov (105 minutes per goal), and Van Persie (110 m per goal) have a better record than the little Mexican.

So Ferguson has a major decision to make tonight, shall he choose his strike partnership based on form, or reputation?

  1. Very interesting article, Jassim. There's no denying the form of Hernandez and Rooney's current form isn't reflecting the player's real stature, the Rooney we've fallen in love with and are used to! Best evidence is the crowd's raving response during his goal against Rangers during Champions League. Don't you agree that form is temporary (Hernandez) and Class is permanent? (Wayne Rooney)
