Diamonds Are Forever

Chelsea have shocked the world by spending £70 Million on deadline day to sign Fernando Torres and David Luiz. This is a real statement of intent made by the London club, and a real show of faith from Roman Abramovich, but the question now is, where will they fit into Ancelotti's formation?

For the past year, Carlo Ancelotti has used a 4-3-3 formation, very similar to the one used by Barcelona, but this formation can only accommodate one absolute striker, while two others play off the wing. If Carlo sticks with this formation, it would mean that either Drogba or Torres must be sacrificed to the wings, and based on the two players ego's, they will not take this decision lightly.

Another option for Ancelotti is return to the 4-1-2-1-2 Diamond formation, of which he frequently used during his time at Milan, using both Torres and Drogba up front, and Lampard sitting just behind them, playing the catalyst for the attack. This would leave Anelka as an impact substitute, who would be a much better option coming on rather than the inconsistent Kalou. Another advantage to this formation is that it allows the manager to play his two main strikers in the positions they are good at, so there is absolutely no tactical gamble involved when playing the Diamond formation.

Do not be surprised if Chelsea's formation changes in the next 3 or 4 games, as it is vital for Carlo Ancelotti to find the perfect tactic to accommodate this new influx of talent. One thing is for sure though, if Drogba or Torres are played out of position, there will be mutiny.
