The Battle for Manchester

Josep Guardiola has finally renewed his Barcelona contract before it expires in the summer. Pep only extended it by one year, which ignites further speculation linking him with the soon to be vacant managerial position at Old Trafford. Another candidate to Sir Alex's position is Jose Mourinho, who has admitted many times in the past how he would very much like to succeed the Scotsman. The only question is, who would be more suited for Manchester United.

Guardiola has had a ridiculously good spell with Barcelona, despite it being his first and therefore only professional managerial job. He has won the Champions League, La Liga, and Copa Del Rey, by playing attractive football. He has balanced success with attractive football in amazing fashion, something Arsene Wenger had failed to do in the past 6 years. But can Guardiola translate his Barcelona tactics into Manchester United? It would be very difficult as football in England is not played through possession, but end to end. If Guardiola is to succeed in England he must be able to adapt in a tactical sense as quickly as possible.

Pep must also face the massive pressure on managers coming from tabloid newspapers. Luiz Scolari bowed down to media pressure, along with Fabio Capello. Guardiola is very media shy and it could go against him in England.

Guardiola must also work on a very tight budget, due to the fact that Manchester United is in debt. Pep is not used to working with a small transfer, as we saw he bought a major signing in every season he has been in Barcelona, bringing in Dani Alves, Ibrahimovic, and David Villa. At Manchester United, the spending must be low.

Mourinho on the other hand will not need anytime to adjust, as he speaks perfect English and is very tactically aware of English football. The Portuguese miracle maker has worked with tight budgets at Porto and Inter Milan, yet won the Champions league with both, which could be a good sign. However, the problem with Mourinho is the fact that he does not stay at one club for more than 3-4 years, and that is something Manchester United can not tolerate. Despite Mourinho's nomadic past, it will be very unlikely for Jose to change clubs if he joins Manchester United next, due to the fact that he will have coached the best teams in the top European countries.

Guardiola and Mourinho are not the only candidates, as there are a lot of former Manchester United players linked to the club, however none have European Champions League medals as coaches, and very little experience. Whoever replaces Ferguson, though, has a lot of work to do.
