Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, one of English football's leading clubs, signed South African international footballer, Steven Pienaar. His name is added to a very large list of players signed by the team affectionately known as 'Spurs', who are not needed in the first place. Harry Redknapp already has two established wingers in Bale and Lennon, along with other capable wide men in Kranjcar, O'Hara and Bentley.
The 'Pienaar' confusion started when he played his first Tottenham game on the left wing against Newcastle, meaning that Gareth Bale had to be dropped to the left-back position. The reason for which i used the word confusion is this, Tottenham's wingers tend to play closer to the by-lines and whip in crosses to the strikers, just as they did so perfectly in their 3-1 win against Inter Milan. Against Newcastle, Pienaar opted to start on the wing, and drift into the middle quite a lot, which caused a lot of confusing moments for Spurs' attackers. The conundrum continued yesterday when Pienaar was again preferred ahead of Bale, and again Tottenham failed to attack properly, having just 1 shot on target the whole 90 minutes, and losing 4-0 to a team in the bottom half of the league.
Harry Redknapp must return to playing Lennon and Bale on the wings, and find a solution for Pienaar quickly. Pienaar can be used as cover for Van der Vaart's 'second striker' position, as he has played this role in some games for Everton. But the main thing is for Harry Redknapp and Tottenham to stop making useless transfer dealings, and making tactical gambles on successful tactics.
